Recommendations for Importing 3D Models in 2Shapes Design

Thank you for using 2Shapes Design! Below, we provide some important considerations for importing 3D models into our platform. Currently, the supported format is Rhino's 3DM, and we are working on adding support for other formats such as STL, STP, and OBJ.

Considerations for Importing 3DM

  1. Version 6.0 or Higher of Rhino: Make sure your Rhino 3DM file is in version 6.0 or later. If you have an older version, simply open the file in a newer version of Rhino (6.0 or higher) and click "Save." Rhino will prompt you to save the file in the current version; respond with "yes!" If you need to update a file with an older version, you can download a 90-day trial version of Rhino to perform this process.

  2. Layers and Static Elements: When importing a 3DM file, we take into account the existing layers, and each layer will create a static element in our design. Empty layers will be ignored, allowing us to maintain an organized and efficient control of the design.

  3. Importing Gems from Other Plugins: 2Shapes imports and converts gems from Matrix and RhinoGold, but keep in mind that these gems should not be grouped. Therefore, we recommend ungrouping them before importing them into 2Shapes Design.

  4. Blocks Are Not Supported: In some older versions of plugins like Matrix, blocks were used. Although Rhino supports this entity, it is no longer used in jewelry design. To import geometry correctly, it is necessary to explode the blocks following these steps:

    a) Select all blocks in the document and explode them: Use the "SelBlockInstance" command and explode the blocks with the "Explode" command. b) Once you have the geometry in the document, you can delete the blocks using the "BlockManager" command. Select each block and delete them by clicking the "Delete" button.

That's it! With these recommendations, you'll be able to efficiently import your 3D models and make the most of all the design features offered by 2Shapes Design. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us. Happy designing!
